Software Architect Reports To VP of Engineering Summary Help us build and maintain some of the best-loved ("hug-worthy") software services in the K-12 Education market. In this role, you'll be responsible for the design, delivery, and maintenance of software systems serving thousands of K-12 districts across North America. We are looking for an experienced Software Architect to join our talented team of developers, working across several products. As the first architect on the team, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the quality of our products, mentoring our developers, and leading technical decision-making. We're on a growth path, and we need strong technical leadership to help us reach our goals. You'll need to balance the needs of multiple stakeholders, show good judgment, and help lead our team toward highly effective processes and technologies. This role requires a high degree of leadership, emotional intelligence, and technical skill. The ideal candidate has strong experience fulfilling one of these roles (or an equivalent role): Application Architect, Systems Architect, Solution Architect, Enterprise Architect, Software Architect, Chief Architect. Responsibilities Mentoring and Team Growth: Foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement, mentoring developers to enhance their technical skills and capabilities. Provide guidance on best practices, design patterns, and industry trends. A core duty is the elevation of your colleagues. Architectural Design: Work closely with product managers, developers, and stakeholders to design and develop scalable, maintainable, and efficient software systems and solutions for our products. Technical Leadership: Serve as the technical authority for the engineering team, leading the decision-making process on architecture, technologies, and best practices. Ensure architectural consistency and alignment across all products. Code Review and Quality Assurance: Regularly review code, providing constructive feedback to developers and ensuring adherence to coding standards, best practices, and architectural principles. Actively participate in the definition and improvement of quality assurance processes. Process Improvement: Collaborate with development managers and other team members to identify and implement process improvements, streamline workflows, and optimize development practices. Contractor Management: Oversee and manage the work of contractors, ensuring timely delivery and quality of work, while maintaining alignment with the overall technical vision. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with other departments, such as Product Management, Sales, and Marketing, to ensure seamless integration of engineering efforts with other business functions. Act as a pinch hitter. There may be times when you'll need to get hands on, and help solve an urgent problem. We expect this to be an exception and that it is a duty secondary to all of the others. Qualifications Must haves Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience. 8-12+ years of experience in software development, including 4+ years in a software architect or similar role. Deep understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and best practices. Proficient in TypeScript/JS, Java, and Node ecosystems. Demonstrated experience in mentoring and coaching developers, fostering team growth and development. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound technical decisions. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences. Experience managing contractors and working with cross-functional teams. Ability to demonstrate you are humble, hungry, and smart. This means being able to take criticism well; be assertive enough to ask for help; contribute in a team environment; be willing to admit being wrong and learn from any mistakes; stick to an issue or problem and never give up on a customer. This also means not being a jerk. Nice to haves K-12 education experience Relevant certifications, such as TOGAF, AWS Certified Solutions Architect, etc. NOTE: This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive.
