The City of Homer is accepting applications for: Full-Time Firefighter/ EMT- Basic (EMT-I) or Firefighter/EMT-Advanced (EMT-II or EMT-III) Questions? Must be able to annually pass the physical exam, fit test, and meet the physical ability requirements for a Firefighter and EMT as defined in Homer Fire Department policy. Starting salary for Firefighter/EMT-Basic (EMT-I) is $65,782.00 or higher $$$, DOE, with attractive benefits. Applicants who meet the qualifications listed below for Firefighter/ EMT-Advanced (EMT-II or EMT-III) will qualify for higher rates of pay based on experience Residency requirement: Employees of the Homer Volunteer Fire Department are required to live within a 15 minute maximum response/ drive time to Fire Station 1 FIREFIGHTER/ EMT-BASIC (EMT-I) GENERAL FUNCTIONS Multifaceted position that responds to emergency calls as a Firefighter-Basic Life Support EMT, operates all apparatus, and assists with training, administrative, maintenance and support services in the Fire Department. JOB FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR ACTIVITIES: Responds to emergency calls as a Firefighter-BLS provider, drives and operates all vehicles and equipment. Performs vehicle readiness checks, equipment inventories and other related tasks. Assists with the delivery of fire department training programs. Performs a wide range of clerical duties. Assists with the fire department's information management system. Enters and maintains records, billing, emergency service reports, training records, statistics, personnel records and other related information. Represents the fire department and the city at the watch desk by responding to citizen inquiries and other public and agency contacts. Performs general care and maintenance of fire department facilities, apparatus and equipment including housekeeping, maintenance and minor repairs. Assists with public education, fire prevention, and disaster preparedness programs. Performs some routine purchasing for the fire department. Performs other duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Three years' experience with emergency services. Must be currently certified as an EMT-Basic or EMT-I with the ability to be certified as an EMT-Advanced or EMT-II within one year of hire, or Advanced NREMT. Must possess Firefighter-I certificate. Must be able to drive and operate all fire department vehicles within 6 months of hire. Requires High School Diploma or GED. Working knowledge of modern office procedures and use of computers and software programs. Requires excellent organizational and communication skills. Able to perform minor maintenance repairs. Requires a current Alaska Drivers License with a CDL preferred. DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Firefighter-II certification. Driver/ Pump Operator certification. Two-year Fire Science, Fire Service Administration or related degree desired DECISION MAKING RESPONSIBILITIES Requires ability to exercise independent judgment in the performance of all aspects of duties. Carries out procedures at a division level. Responsible for decisions which may involve possible loss of life or destruction of property. Activities are a major source of potential liability to the City. Moderate budget authority at division level. Work requires confidentiality. SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY Supervises and mentors lateral and subordinate volunteers and provides leadership during emergency and non-emergency department operations until relieved by a higher ranking officer or member of the department. EXTERNAL VISIBILITY/CONTACT Low contact with key city personnel and frequency of presentations/attendance at public meetings. High frequency of contact with general public. Low frequency of contact with government officials and key service personnel. WORKING CONDITIONS High frequency of exposure to hazardous situations in performance of firefighter or EMT duties. Moderate exposure to adverse weather conditions. May be required to work any shifts, holidays, weekends and overtime. Regularly on-call for emergency calls. Must be able to annually pass the physical exam, fit test, and meet the physical ability requirements for a Firefighter and EMT as defined in Homer Fire Department policy . FIREFIGHTER/ EMT-ADVANCED (EMT-II) GENERAL FUNCTIONS Multifaceted position that responds to emergency calls as a Senior Firefighter- Advanced Life Support EMT, operates all apparatus, and provides training, administrative, maintenance and support services in the Fire Department. JOB FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR ACTIVITIES: Responds to emergency calls as a Firefighter-I - ALS provider, drives and operates all vehicles and equipment. Performs vehicle readiness checks, equipment inventories and other related tasks. Assists with the development and delivery of fire department training programs. Performs a wide range of clerical duties. Assists with the fire department's information management system. Enters and maintains records, billing, emergency service reports, training records, statistics, personnel records and other related information. Represents the fire department and the city at the fire department watch desk by responding to citizen inquiries and other public and agency contacts. Performs general care and maintenance of fire department facilities, apparatus and equipment including housekeeping, maintenance and minor repairs. Certified as an IFSAC or Pro Board Firefighter II required. Must possess Fire Service Instructor-I or EMT-I Instructor within one year. POSSESS Driver/ Pump Operator certification at time of hire. Working knowledge of modern office procedures and use of computers and software programs. Requires excellent organizational and communication skills. Able to perform minor maintenance and repairs. Requires a current Alaska Drivers License with a CDL preferred. DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Associates Degree in Fire Science, Fire Service Administration or related field or equivalent experience/college credit hours. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES Seven years experience with emergency services, two of which must be with HVFD. Must possess a State of Alaska certification as a Firefighter II, Fire Service Instructor-I or EMT Instructor-I, Fire Officer I, EMT III. Must be able to drive and operate all fire department vehicles. Associates Degree in Fire Science, Fire Service Administration or related field or equivalent experience/college credit hours. Working knowledge of modern office procedures and use of computers and software programs including: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and the Fire Department specific programs. Requires excellent organizational and communication skills. Able to perform minor maintenance and repairs. Requires a current Alaska Drivers License with a CDL preferred. DECISION MAKING RESPONSIBILITIES Requires ability to exercise independent judgment in the performance of all aspects of duties. Develops procedures for training at division level.
