POSITION PURPOSE : The Director of Nursing is responsible for the delivery of health series to the residents of PRI. This position requires rotating 24-hour on-call duty and flexibility in hours to assure adequate nursing coverage for resident needs. NATURE AND SCOPE : The Director of Nursing is supervised by the Director of Health Services who reports to the Vice President. This position requires and effective role model for change, management and practitioner standards of behavior. The position is responsible for developing/maintaining standards of practice and performance and overseeing schedules to maintain adequate coverage. The position requires a knowledgeable positive and professional team leader who exemplifies the philosophies of The Phoenix Residence, Inc. and represents the entire Health Services Department. Exposure to bloodborne pathogens in this position is in Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Category II, with no regular exposure to blood or body fluids. The Director of Nursing identifies and responds to residents needs in emotional and social areas, however, intervention in these areas does not fall within the meaning of psychotherapy. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES : RESIDENT CARE AND TREATMENT - Establishes standards of nursing service practice in an effort to assure that residents receive quality care; evaluates residents' condition, activities, for effective care planning; participates in Individual Habilitative Planning conferences, admission screenings and discharges and resident teamings as requested; monitors Psychotropic Medications; periodically reviews residents' diets with the dietitian and in Food Services Committee meetings' administers, handles, and orders medications; oversees scheduling of appointments to assure proper referrals are made and recommendations followed; admits, transfers and discharges residents; notifies physician and another ID team members of changes in residents' status; assures routine charting, weights, vital signs and immunizations completed for each person living at the Phoenix Residence, Inc. REGUATIONS COMPLIANCE - Adheres to all policies and procedures and philosophy of the Phoenix Residence, Inc. and rules and regulations of licensing agencies including those of the MN Board of Nursing and the Nurse Practice Act. Is responsible for physicians rounds, when taking telephone orders to accurately transcribe and assure orders followed; documents in and maintains residents medical records; performs periodic chart audits. Attends all mandatory and other job related in-services annually; and maintains and adequate number of continuing education credits. Assists surveyors upon building surveys. Participates in fire alarm/drill situations as building charge role requires; initiates fire drills on various shifts as delegated; activates/directs emergency medical procedures or building emergency procedures as delegated and as per established Phoenix policies procedures and guidelines. Contacts appropriate on-call emergency departments and notifies appropriate on-call supervisors. HUMAN RELATIONS - Maintains and fosters professional relationships with residents, their families, medical staff, consultants and community members. Delivers written and verbal information in a way that conveys respect of residents and others; advocates for residents through appointment referrals, doctors rounds, telephone consultations, teamings, shift report, committee meetings, and IHP meetings. Displays positive, supportive and cooperative conduct. DEVELOPMENT OF POSITION - Participates in staff orientation as needed, in-services including CPR, staff meetings; hires and trains nurses/TMA's. Schedules hours of Health Services staff and TMA's. Keeps staff informed of new procedures or techniques. Attends shift report and informs of medical issues as needed. Serves as a liaison between shifts to assure tasks are completed. Maintains on-gong continuing broad knowledge of facility impacted health trends. Proposes new ideas, growth, and creativity. Provides development and training opportunities for team members and subordinates. MANAGEMENT DUTIES - Directly and indirectly supervises the Heath Services staff, hires, evaluates performance and assures currently licensure of these staff; participates with the president in planning, decision making, budgeting for the departments; develops job descriptions as changes occur; maintains compliance with safety and infection control policies/procedures and professional standards of practice. Responds to hazardous situations promptly and reports potentially dangerous hazards. Participates in monthly Food Service meetings, Health Services meetings, Utilization Review, Pharmacy Review and Infection Control Committee meetings, also Director Staff, admissions committee, Quality Assurance Sub-Committee(s) and others as needed. Recognizes, evaluates and corrects problem areas within supervisory capacity, taking into account the company wide impact. ASSUMPTION OF ADDITONAL RESPONSIBILITIES, AND REQUIRED OR REQUESTED . QUALIFICATIONS A current RN license to practice nursing in the State of Minnesota. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation instructor certification or the ability to complete. Certified Tardive Dyskinesia rater or ability to obtain. Experience in the treatment of individuals with developmental disabilities. Staff development training experience. Ability to assist with lifts and transfers, occasionally lifting up to 75 pounds. Ability to sit, stand, push/pull wheelchairs. Ability to read, write and speak the English language. Ability to hear and see to make clinical assessments.
