The City of Independence Recreation Department is committed to excellence in programming, facilities, and service while improving the quality of life within our community. We possess a team of highly trained and passionate lifeguards who are dedicated to ensuring the health and safety of all pool guests. The primary responsibility of Independence Lifeguards is to ensure the safety of our residents and their guests first through preventative strategies and water safety education. It is essential that Lifeguards also take action as the first responder to incidents and emergencies within our aquatic facilities. WHY INDEPENDENCE? Wages start between $12.00 up to $17.00 with opportunity for additional compensation with paid training and certifications. Lifeguard with WSI certification range $12.45 - $17.45/hr Staff receives paid training for recertification and city paid training opportunities including. Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) Annual pay increases for tenured employees Development opportunities with training and advancement opportunities The indoor pool at the Independence Recreation Center is open year-round, while the outdoor pool is open during the summer season. Successful part time candidates typically work 20-30 hours per week. Part Time Morning shift begins at 5:45 am and the Part Time Afternoon Shift begins at noon. RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following: Recognize and respond quickly and effectively as the first responder. Routinely engage with the public during active surveillance to enforce all aquatic facility rules. Inspect the facility daily including testing the pool water every 4 hours and reporting any unsafe conditions promptly. Participate in all Lifeguard In-service training sessions. Participate in unannounced emergency response scenarios. Maintain a fitness level equivalent to American Red Cross Lifeguard performance criteria. Complete additional duties as assigned by supervisor. QUALIFICATIONS: Self-motivated and willingness to be a leader. Public relations skills including strong communication skills and ability to project voice. Decision making skills. Lifeguard Certification or proficient swimmer able to become Lifeguard certified. Must pass a drug test and background check. Ability to physically stand, bend, squat, and lift up to 50 lbs. Ability to work outdoors in a mixture of weather conditions and stay on feet for extended periods of time.
