THOMAS - HOUSTON DEPARTMENT: SCHOOL OF ARTS, SCIENCE AND DIVISION OF LIBERAL STUDIES DIRECTOR AND ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN ART HISTORY The University of St. Thomas (www.stthom.edu), is a private Catholic university, located in Houston, Texas-the nation's fourth largest city-that gives pride of place to the liberal arts and the Catholic intellectual tradition within its mission of faithful Catholic higher education. As such, the University is seeking a full-time Associate Professor of Art History who will serve as the founding Director of the Allbritton Art Institute * at the University. The ideal candidate will be a successful scholar, an inspiring teacher, and an experienced builder of programs. The position will report to the Division Dean of Liberal Studies in the School of Arts and Sciences. *About the Allbritton Art Institute As a partner with the University of St. Thomas, the Allbritton Art Institute creates a unique center for the study of art history and will serve its students and the broader community. Institute educational objectives include offering classes, lectures, library holdings, and opportunities for students to study fine art in the great museums of the world. Strong partnerships with renowned museums and universities in Houston, including the MFA-H, and other fine arts institutions are integral to the Institute's mission to provide opportunities for students to study original works of art. The Allbritton Art Institute was established in 1997 by Joe and Barbara Allbritton to promote the appreciation and comprehensive study of the artists and art movements of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with emphasis on Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The University is seeking an art historian with a record of successful teaching and publication. The successful candidate will work collaboratively to build on-campus Institute programs for this newly-formed partnership between the University of St. Thomas and the Allbritton Art Institute. Although the art history specialty is open, the successful candidate should have a significant degree of expertise and interest in 19th-century art history to fulfil Institute objectives. The successful candidate will teach in his or her area of specialization and will be fluent in a multidisciplinary approach to the study of Art History that includes social, cultural, and philosophical contexts at both undergraduate and masters levels. The candidate will be expected to teach "Survey of Art I & II," as well as the fine arts course within the university's core, "Art and Contemplation." A non-western secondary concentration is highly desirable. The Institute's Director fulfills the duties of a Department Chair at the University. Administrative duties include building and leading a program in art history studies, as well as meeting other Institute objectives. This will involve but not be limited to the organization, management, and promotion of the Institute as well as collaboration within and beyond the University and serving as a liaison with local museums and arts organizations. Other administrative duties may also be required as assigned by the Dean of Liberal Studies. The duties and responsibilities of this position require the highest standards of commitment to student success, collegiality, and commitment to the mission of the university. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS A completed Doctoral Degree, Experience teaching undergraduate and graduate students (preferred), Must have competency in an online teaching environment.
