The City of Litchfield Park is currently recruiting lifeguards for the 2018 summer season. The season runs from April 2018 to September 2018. Lifeguard’s will work 25 – 40 hours per week, depending on aquatic needs. Qualified applicants will be invited to attend an in-person interview and an in-water skills test. The in-water skills test includes an assessment of various lifeguard skills, fitness level, and swimming stroke techniques. All staff are required to purchase a red swimsuit/shorts as their uniform selected by the Aquatics Department. American Red Cross lifeguard courses will be offered at the Litchfield Park Rec Center the weekends of March 23 and April 1 and another seesion will be held the weekends of April 13 and April 20. The course is split between two consecutive weekends and involves in-class and in-water participation. A hiring event will be held on the last Sunday of the class after the exams. American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) courses will also be offered on the weekends of May 4 - May13 and again on May 18 - May 27. The course is split between two consecutive weekends and will involve online course work as well as in-water participation. For general registration and class information, please call 623-935-XXXX. The City is a drug-free environment. Lifeguard II’s will monitor the use of the swimming pool area to prevent accidents and to provide water rescue and first aid when required. The primary responsibility is to help ensure patron safety and protect lives, caution patrons about safety hazards, and maintain order in pool. Other duties include routine maintenance in and around pool, answering patron’s questions, and completing mandatory skill checks and in-services. Additionally, Lifeguard II’s provide swimming and diving instruction, and organize lessons plans for swim classes. SUMMARY: Incumbents perform supervision of swimming activities, water rescue of patrons, enforcement of policies and procedures, and monitoring of swimming pool facilities. Incumbents oversee and perform advanced level swimming instruction. Incumbents must have a broader program knowledge to include applicable policies and regulations. Incumbents are responsible for program monitoring and evaluation. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND REPSONSIBILITIES (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledges, skills, and other characteristics. Performs the following:Understands and enforces pool rules.Monitors use of pool area and provides water rescue and first aid.Answers aquatics programming questions and provides information to patrons.Completes all required paperwork timely and accurately.Assits in cleaning the facility.Participates in all in-service trainings throughout the season.Teaches swimming skills and water safety classes that adhere to City of Litchfield Park guidelines.Assists in performing pool maintenance and daily operaion projects.Performs routine clerical work.Performs tasks related to the patrolling of the pool, which may include: patrolling pool from assigned stations providing a uniformed presence insuring the safety of swimmers and patrons; using applicable victim detection methods and evaluating environmental concerns, i.e., electrical storms, high winds; enforcing all rules, regulations and ordinances governing pool operations; and assisting or rescuing swimmers in distress. Assists with planning regularly scheduled in-service training for subordinate lifeguards. Conducts swimming lessons and/or practices for the general public and/or swim team. Performs other duties of a similar nature. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Must be a minimum of 16 years of age and have one to three months related experience and/or training. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (position requirements at entry)Knowledge of: Applicable principles and practices in assigned program area; Water rescue, first aid, CPR and lifesaving skills; Modern office practices and equipment; and Customer service principles. Ability to: Act quickly and calmly in emergencies; Lift arms above shoulder level; Administer first aid and CPR; Perform rescue actions; Communicate effectively with staff and public; Work with all age groups, including children; To work on a team; Maintain a safe working environment; Use preventative measures to avoid accidents and injures; Resolve conflicts in a professional tactful manner; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City staff and the public; and Work safely. LICENSING REQUIREMENTS (positions in this class typically require) Current First Aide Certification; Current CPR and AED Certification; Current Lifeguard Training Certification; and Current Water Safety Instructor Certification PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.Medium Work: Exerting and/or lifting up to 100 pounds of force. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The noise level in this environment is mostly moderate to loud.
