The City of Litchfield Park is currently recruiting lifeguards for the 2018 summer season. The season runs from April 2018 to September 2018. Lifeguard's will work 25 40 hours per week, depending on aquatic needs.Qualified applicants will be invited to attend an in-person interview and an in-water skills test. The in-water skills test includes an assessment of various lifeguard skills, fitness level, and swimming stroke techniques. All staff are required to purchase a red swimsuit/shorts as their uniform selected by the Aquatics Department. The City of Litchfield Park is a drug-free environment. SUMMARY: Incumbents perform supervision of swimming activities, water rescue of patrons, enforcement of policies and procedures, and monitoring of swimming pool facilities. Incumbents oversee and perform advanced level swimming instruction. Incumbents participate in scheduling, planning, and reviewing activities, and assigning day-to-day maintenance duties. Incumbents must have a broader program knowledge to include applicable policies and regulations. Incumbents are responsible for program monitoring and evaluation, including special events. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND REPSONSIBILITIES (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledges, skills, and other characteristics. Performs the following: Serves as a lead to staff to include assigning and monitoring work and providing directions. Assists in preparing and coordinating public events, classes, and/or activities in assigned area of responsibility, which may include: procuring supplies; developing registration information; setting up sites; setting up teams and/or heat sheets; monitoring events; and/or performing other related activities. Performs tasks related to routing day-to-day operations which may include: maintaining cleanliness of facilities; maintaining proper pool water chemistry; collecting information on participants; creating curriculums; monitoring the safety of facilities and participants; maintaining inventory; performing other related activities; and completing all required documentation; Assists in facilitating classes, events, and/or activities in assigned area of responsibility. Performs routine clerical work. Performs tasks related to the patrolling of the pool, which may include; patrolling pool from assigned stations providing a uniformed presence insuring the safety of swimmers and patrons; using applicable victim detection methods and evaluating environmental concerns, i.e., electrical storms, high winds; enforcing all rules, regulations and ordinances governing pool operations; and assisting or rescuing swimmers in distress. Assists in the planning of and, and participates in regularly scheduled in-service training for subordinate lifeguards. Additional responsibilities may include: Organizes and manages the swim team. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Must have a high school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one (1) to two (2) seasons of related experience and/or training. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (position requirements at entry)Knowledge of: Applicable principles and practices in assigned program areas; Pool pump room operations and healthy water chemistry; and Microsoft Office programs. Skill in: Providing customer service; Working with youth; Resolving conflict; and Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. Sufficient to exchange or convery information and to receive work directions. Ability to: Work with all age groups, including children; Effectively build and manage a team; Act quickly and calmly in emergencies; Lift arms above shoulder level; Administer first aid and CPR; Perform rescue actions; Communicate effectively with staff and public; Use preventative measures to avoid accidents and injuries Resolve conflicts in a professional tactful manner; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City staff; and Work safely. LICENSING REQUIREMENTS (positions in this class typically require) Current First Aide certification; Current CPR/AED certification; and Current Lifeguard Training certification. Current Water Safety Instructor certification (preferred). PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Medium Work: Lifting or exerting to 100 pounds of force daily.Incumbents work in the outdoors and are exposed to extremems in temperature without effective protection from the weather.
