PURPOSE OF POSITION Under general supervision, the bus driver provides safe transportation services for students and employees so that students may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from the school's curriculum and extracurricular program. QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS High School Diploma or equivalent. Must be 21 or more years old. Must possess NM CDL License issued by the NM Motor Vehicle Division with proper endorsements. Ability to read, write, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures. CPR and First Aid Certification Required. Ability to maintain conditions conducive to safe transportation while performing duties. Ability to cope with stressful situations in a professional manner without losing composure. Must pass background checks on driving records and criminal history. Navajo /Indian Preference: Consideration for employment will be given to Navajo, American Indian or Alaskan Tribal member with the required documentation including the necessary qualifications to meet the minimal requirements of the position. The Navajo/Indian preference law shall apply in all aspects of the position. CLASSIFICATION This is a non-classified, non-exempt support position employed on an as-needed basis. Payment rate is according to the NPS Support Salary Scale. TERM OF EMPLOYMENT Current school year Note: Notwithstanding the above, this position is subject to possible furlough, or reduction in force under NPS, Inc. Personnel Policies; due to unforeseen reductions in program funding that requires such general program changes. SUPERVISOR Primary: Facility Manager Secondary: Transportation Coordinator RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES Operates bus in accordance with New Mexico standards for transporting students: 6.41.4 NMAC and the BIA Safe Motor Vehicle and Commercial Motor Vehicle Operation Policy. Conducts thorough pre-trip and post-trip safety and service checks and reports any problems to supervisor immediately. Checks the condition of a bus and vehicle's tires, brakes, windshield wipers, lights, oil, fuel, water, and safety equipment to ensure that everything is in working order. Verifies proper vehicle insurance records and registration are in school vehicle at all times. Verifies bus schedules for week and week-end transportation. Complies with traffic regulations in order to operate bus and vehicle in a safe and courteous manner. Follows safety rules as students are boarding and exiting buses, and as they cross streets near bus stops. Pick up and drop off students at regularly scheduled locations, following strict time schedules. Provides maximum safety for passengers while on the school bus and during loading and unloading and verifying head count before leaving each stop area. Regulate heating, lighting, and ventilation systems for passenger comfort. Keep all buses clean and maintained and report needs for servicing and/or repairs immediately. Maintain knowledge of emergency and first-aid procedures. Prepare and submit reports that may include the number of passengers or trips, hours worked, mileage and fuel consumption. In addition to regular transportation to and from school, the bus driver may be required to drive for a field trip or transport a school to an athletic competition. Reports undisciplined students to the Dean of Instruction. Completes required driver log and reports by the school including accident, incident and unusual occurrence reports. Participates and completes any required training programs successfully. Relates and interacts with colleagues, supervisors, school staff, students, parents and community members in a professional manner. Maintains good public relations. Ability to perform with light physical effort, requiring the handling of average-weight objects up to 10 pounds with some standing or walking. Supports and efficiently carries out responsibilities in accordance with Navajo Preparatory School Board, Inc. (NPS) Policies and Procedures. Represents NPS in a manner reflecting professionalism and which enhances community understanding of the program. Performs other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.
