The primary role is in weekly lab preparation, daily or weekly experiment verification, interaction with graduate student instructors and students. This position requires a 'hands-on' technician with a broad skill set with an eagerness to learn. In addition to the technical aspect, the position requires significant communication skills to successfully interact with a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff members. The candidate should have a natural collaborative spirit to assist all students and ensure a safe learning environment. During non-instructional periods, short-term assignments to other duties within the Mechanical Engineering department will be part of this position especially during the summer months. Duties include: 35% Laboratory experiment set-up and confirmation 25% Grad student training and student lab interaction 25% Various Mechanical or Electrical design/assembly/maintenance/repair 15% Machining, fabrication and assembly of lab test fixtures/specimens Required Qualifications* Experience operating test equipment, including soldering equipment, multimeters, and oscilloscopes, with a solid knowledge of electrical/electronic components and other equipment. Experience in the operation, calibration, maintenance and repair of scientific equipment systems. Prior experience in machining/fabrication (e.g. mill and/or lathe) and basic hand/power tools (e.g. drill, jigsaw, etc.). Computer skills using Microsoft Windows operating system and experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel). Must be able to move and transport equipment up to 30 lbs. Excellent communication skills. Demonstrated experience following and monitoring safety protocols. Desired Qualifications* Associate's degree in a related field with up to three years of experience in mechanical or electrical operation, testing or repair. Ability to stay well-organized, work independently, follow established procedures, and manage time to meet project deadlines Experience with CNC machining operation or willingness to learn. Quality-conscientious and detailed oriented Experience with strain gauge instrumentation, AC refrigeration equipment, and microscopes Previous experience with LabView is desirable but not mandatory, training can be provided. Knowledge of U-M resources, policies and procedures Experience training, observing, and correcting novice users in a laboratory environment. Ability to import, manipulate, and present data using Excel (or Matlab).
