Description:

With preliminary direction from a licensed architect, prepare building energy models using energy simulation software including IESVE, eQuest, Design Builder, Open Studio or equivalents to evaluate heating loads, cooling loads and the buildings overall energy performance; conduct comprehensive daylight analysis with lighting design programs including Climate Studio, Honeybee, Diva, or AGI32 to evaluate the spatial daylight autonomy, annual sunlight exposure and disturbing glare and provide design teams with analytical reports using the outcome data; conduct Whole building lifecycle assessment (LCA) analysis using programs including Tally, One Click, or Athena or equivalents and present detailed reports and findings on embodied and operational carbon footprints of projects; work closely with design team to ensure projects meet green building certification requirements, including LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), ILFI, LBC, WELL Building Standard, Fitwel, and Net Zero Energy, by integrating sustainable design principles and strategies into energy models; work in conjunction with firm-wide sustainable design leadership in the continued improvement and development of firm-wide high performance design to maintain and improve the quality and consistency of design environment and deliverables; ensure the accuracy and reliability of energy data by conducting quality checks and validating results against actual building performance data when available; provide design teams with knowledge of the technology behind key energy efficiency and conservation measures (including lighting, HVAC, service hot water, data centers, building envelope, refrigeration, industrial processes, energy management and building automation control systems, Plug & Process Loads (PPL) motors and VFDs, electrical transmission/generation, etc.); provide research, outreach, and support to research projects to scale up energy efficiency as the basis for decarbonization in buildings using various government, national labs and non-profit resources and data including DOE, NREL, PNNL etc.; present data findings and recommendations to clients and design teams using high-level data visualization tools such as Power BI or preferably with scripting languages libraries including Matplotlib, Numpy, and Seaborn; work with firm-wide projects' energy data repositories and use data analytics methods and tools including R, Tableau, or PowerBI or equivalent data analytic packages on Python to explore correlations between efficiency measures and energy and carbon reductions in the portfolio and generate data analytic reports; set up automated parametric optimization workflows using available and custom developed Python, SQL or C++ scripts in Grasshopper to connect 3D modeling tools, building environmental analysis tools and evolutionary optimization algorithms to optimize the building shape and/or building envelope and provide quick feedback on the performance to rest of the design team; prepare Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation to evaluate indoor and outdoor comfort level and ventilation strategies; research domestic and international building codes and regulations, collect data, and write reports and presentations to incorporate research and data into architectural designs; provides internal QA/QC, focused on incorporation of sustainability measures into projects and specifications to support both the client and PW's decarbonization and sustainability goals; investigate and develop analytical methods and analytical tools to support the energy, economic and environmental analyses of energy efficiency policies and track public portfolio databases to measure the scale of policies' impact; explore firm-wide sustainable projects and conduct research on the efficiency measure and prepare manuscripts to submit to various conferences or academic journals; develop virtual reality (VR) models for various design options to provide a clear understanding of their daylight performance to clients and design teams; conduct Benchmarking studies over various parameters including Energy Use Intensity (EUI) and embodied carbon data of firm-wide projects; work on preparing interactive platforms to launch and visualize the benchmarking results and provide the design teams the correlational studies over the data in a way that design teams can explore different criteria and data characteristics of the projects and their contribution to lowering the energy consumption and carbon footprint; perform necessary modifications of drawings and specifications on Revit BIM or Rhino as energy modeling progress including facade alteration, materials, and other aspects of design arise from client, agency or public input that reduce the carbon and energy footprints.
